In 1968, Deniz Gezmis and his friends opposed the discussions about constructing the Bosporus Bridge of Istanbul saying "Not at the Bosporus, a bridge for the river Zap" and resulting from the campaign carried out in 1969 they built "the Bridge of the Youth" across the river Zap. In 1999, the bridge, located 35 kilometres away from the City Hakkari linking tens of villages, was destroyed by bombings of the State.
Together with the Platform of Branches of KESK in Hakkari and the municipality of the BDP , many organisations support the reconstruction of the bridge. The writer Cezmi Ersoz, who significantly supports the project, said that the bridge creates the enthusiasm of brotherhood. He added "This Bridge was built in 1969. It served the people for 30 years. Unfortunately, it was bombed in 1999. It was the first bridge crossing the river Zap. It was a bridge of peace, of brotherhood. It has a special meaning to reconstruct in these days, in which we need peace so much."
The spokesman of the Platform of Branches of KESK in Hakkari, Cahit Balikesir stated that this bridge is of a special value for the people of Hakkari, that it is an example for the revolutionary struggle carried out by Deniz Gezmis and his friends saying "everybody, from 7 to 70, from the villages and from the city wants to give life again to the memory of Deniz and his friends. This is the spirit. The revolutionary struggle of them is reflected by the people of Hakkari. Everybody wanted the bridge to be reconstructed anyway, thus the demand to do it became concrete. There are the revolutionary longings of the people, their wish for brotherhood.
It is planned that the bridge, which will have the name "Bridge of the Youth and Brotherhood", will be ready and opened on October 3-4, 2010.

During the two days of lively debate, 800 delegates, among them the two Co-Chairs of the BDP Selahattin Demirtas and Gultan Kisanak, other MPs of the BDP, the mayor of Diyarbakir Osman Baydemir, politically banned Co-Chairs Ahmet Turk and Aysel Tugluk as well as Leyla Zana, representatives of the Turkish Peace Assembly, the ESP and also representatives of democratic mass organisations were present there.
Among the most important topics of discussion was the "Democratic Autonomy". At the Congress it was stated that this idea has four pillars, which are Democratic Nation, Democratic Country, Democratic Republic and Democratic Constitution and that it aims at a mutual life of various identities, cultures and faiths.
However, the General Assembly underlined at the same time the fact that autonomy is neither a step on the way to independence nor an extension of the state on a local level by saying "Autonomy does not include an independent state or sharing the power. It is based on the formulary of "state plus democracy".
Another topic of the Assembly was the struggle against the present constitution of Turkey, which is still the constitution of the military coup of September 12. It was underlined that they will struggle for a democratic constitution. In the final declaration it says that the Congress believes that saying "yes" or "no" to a packet of changes on the constitution of the regime of September 12 will not solve anything but that this constitution has to be abolished as a whole. They underlined their position of boycotting the referendum on the constitution, which will take place on September 12 this year.
The assembly elected Ahmet Turk and Aysel Tugluk as Co-Chairs of the DTK.
The head of the Kurdistan Democratic Confederalism ( KCK ) executive board Murat Karayılan also supported the idea of Democratic Autonomy saying in an interview given to the news agency ANF: "Democratic Autonomy is the only way to solve the problem." Moreover, he added that they will propose the three suggestions made by the imprisoned national Kurdish Leader Abdullah Ocalan last week and if the state rejects them and insist on war then they will use their own dynamics and power to realise autonomy.

The first hearing in the trial was scheduled for August 10, however it turned out that the hearing took place already on August 9 in a secret way without even the lawyers being informed about it. It was expected, that on this first hearing against the police agent who killed Kurt, it would be announced that the trial on the death of Şerzan Kurt will be transferred from Mugla to Eskişehir because of "lack of staff members". The official reason given is that security won't be guaranteed as Muğla is a tourist region and security staffs are on duty in coastal regions. The court approved the demand of the governorship of Mugla and transferred the trial to Eskisehir, where the next hearing will take place. However, this decision was taken by the court one day before the date fixed and without informing neither the lawyers nor the family of Serzan Kurt.
In the early morning of August 10, masses of people coming from Izmir, Aydin, Denizli and Bodrum gathered in front of the court building. On their way there, almost every few 100 metres they have been stopped for identity checks by the police. When it turned out that the hearing took place already the day before, the lawyers protested demanding that the hearing will take place, however their demand was rejected. The lawyers said that the trial is being kept out of the public opinion.
